His memory lives on

On the STS Sedov December 25 became the memorial day of an outstanding person, a legendary captain Petr S. Mitrofanov.
On December 25 the ship passed the point where, in 1992, his ashes were immersed in the Atlantic Ocean. The cadets were given a lecture on the life this exceptional Master.

P. S. Mitrofanov was born in 1915. He was not only an outstanding deep sea captain, but also a remarkable scientist, a historian and a writer. From 1948 to 1958 Pyotr Mitrofanov commanded the STS Sedov, supervised her repair, engaged various trainings for her crew. From 1959 to 1960, he also commanded the STS Kruzenshtern and headed Sedov's and Kruzenshtern's expedition. From 1969 to 1974 he was working as Sedov’s Master. He passed away on September 1, 1991.

Mitrofanov's personal compass is kept on the STS Sedov. Today, during the solemn meeting, the relic was shown to the crew and cadets. Without a doubt, his compass will become a reliable talisman for everyone on board.
