To the land of the seven-colored earths

Back
Cape of the Needles, the border of two oceans and the documentary film festival – work and rest hours on board of the STS Sedov.
On March 24, snatches of telephone conversations were heard on every meter of the upper deck. The crew and cadet were calling home. The vessel has left Cape Town. She is heading for Port Louis located in Mauritius.

Cape Town's stay was marked with official visits. The delegation of the Russian diplomatic mission in Cape Town, public figures, members of the expedition "Date with Russia 2020" working under the auspice of the Russian geographical society boarded the Sedov. Mst Evgeniy Romashkin accepted the memorial medal " to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica by Russian navigators F. Bellingshausen and M. Lazarev on the sloops "Vostok" and "Mirnyy". It was stricken for the round-the-world expedition of Rosrybolovstvo. The medal was ordered by the Presidential Grants Fund and the non-profit partnership for promoting the development of cinema and tourism "KiT". The obverse of the medal accurately copies the original made by order of Emperor Alexander I for the expedition lead by Bellingshausen and Lazarev. One can read a dedication to the circumnavigation 2019/2020 made by the Kruzenshtern, Sedov, and Pallada on the reverse.

On the way to Mauritius the Sedov rounded Cape Agulhas (Cape of the Needles). Many people wrongly assume the Cape of Good Hope to be the southernmost tip of Africa, but it is actually Cape Agulhas, located 155 km away from the mainland. Here, the seafarers cross the invisible border between the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. This place has its special laws, formed due to different oceanological processes and properties of the warm Cape current and cold Bengal current. Thus, it is not easy to sail in these waters.

The barque Sedov under sails and a strong tailwind of 25 m/s confidently rounded the South of the continent. The watch officer congratulated everyone on this important and in a way historical moment. The crew of the vessel keeps performing the state voyage order. In their spare time cadets study the rich history of the Russian state and its Maritime heritage, learn about various national traditions, get acquainted with ethnographic aspects. There is a series of documentary films on board made by the Russian geographical society to make the study more vivid. The documentary film festival was opened by Stanislav Stavinov and Andrey Timoshchenko's film "Life with bacteria".
